Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas

Summer has definitely arrived at the Southern tip of Africa and on this 6th December – Saint Nicholas Day – everyone is on the beach and in the turquoise waters. In fact, I don’t recall seeing the water so low, so calm and so pleasant! And there’s lots of life, water-ski, trimarans, sailing boats, kids on bodyboards and locals walking their dogs or enjoying a good gallop on horseback.

Just a perfect day – Saint Nicholas Day!

Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas means something different to everybody, depending on the culture and tradition you are living in.

Saint Nicholas is – as the name says – a saint. He died on 6 December 346 and, based on his gift-giving miracles he was known as “Nicholas the Wondermaker”. . . hardly anyone remembers this and there’s a lot of folklore about this legendary figure who – for Greeks – has become the “Lord of the Sea” and the patron saint of all Greece and. . . yet another reason for Celebration!

Saint Nicholas in Noordhoek South Africa

Saint Nicholas has of course found his way even down here to Noordhoek, South Africa.

Many children have put out their little boots yesterday night – well no longer that little in our consumer-oriented world, as the bigger the container the more can be filled in… and what were sweets and small gifts when we were kids may have evolved into serious ‘orders’ to Saint Nicholas, sealed and stamped and even sent to the North Pole… to be delivered on time! Besides, today everybody is ‘good’ and claims presents – never mind whether he or she were good, polite and obedient; in the old days gifts were only handed out on a pre-behaviour basis and taken pretty serious.

Noordhoek Sunset

While gifts in a sock or a boot are fun for kids, don’t forget the daily miracles around us. It doesn’t need a historical figure for this, it’s Mother Nature being uniquely generous and incredibly forgiving each day, day after day.

Yesterday’s Sunset in Noordhoek was just one of those moments that took my breath away and not only mine: Nature in all its splendour and serenity gives us precious gifts daily – free for everybody; just look around and be grateful!

“Noordhoek Sunset” was a quick picture as the sun disappeared painting the sky for today’s miraculous day.
